During the International Colonial and Export Exhibition in Amsterdam in 1883, Surinamese individuals were dehumanized and displayed as curiosities in an anthropological human zoo. This objectification reinforced damaging stereotypes and distorted perceptions of Surinamese culture and identity. Despite the official end for enslavement in the Netherlands in 1863, dehumanization and exploitation continued. Such exhibitions were tools to justify colonial practices and supported the racism and pseudoscientific theories of the time.
Charmaine's project aims to address this historical injustice by reinterpreting the portraits taken during these exhibitions. By offering a counter-narrative, the project seeks to represent Surinamese culture in a respectful and truthful manner, challenging historical misrepresentations. Reclaiming these images will help redefine them as symbols of identity and move beyond their role as instruments of oppression. This project is essential to reshape perceptions, celebrate our heritage, and honor the richness and complexity of Surinamese cultures.

Tijdens de Internationale Koloniale en Uitvoerhandel Tentoonstelling in Amsterdam in 1883 (wereldtentoonstelling) werden Surinaamse mensen gedehumaniseerd en tentoongesteld als curiositeiten in een antropologische menselijke dierentuin. Deze objectificatie versterkte schadelijke stereotypen en vervormde de percepties van de Surinaamse cultuur en identiteit.
